Preparing for Reception

Learning begins at home

All of the fun activities that you do with your child at home are vitally important in supporting their learning and development, and have a really long lasting effect on your child’s learning as they progress through school.

If you make the time every day to do some of the following things with your child it will make a real difference to your child’s confidence as a young learner and will help support them in making the transition into Reception...

· Reading and enjoying stories with your child on a daily basis, explaining to them the meanings of new words you encounter

· Talking about the numbers, letters, words and colours you see when you are out and about, talk about what you are doing - talk about everything!

· Singing nursery rhymes together

· Encouraging independence when dressing/undressing

· Cooking and baking together and exploring new foods

· Teaching them when and why it is important to wash their hands

· Ensuring they can use the toilet independently and manage personal hygiene

· Developing their gross & fine motor skills (see below)

· Recognising and writing their own name (see the Reading, Writing & Phonics page for more information on our school handwriting style)

· Practising holding a pencil correctly (tripod grip) and making marks.
